According to the Central Bank of Russia, a number of banks have been very good in their operations. They have had a sustained growth, becoming leaders in the financial sector. Today we bring to you the top 10 largest banks in Russia, which the central bank has referred to as “systemic institutions.”

  1. Sberbank

Sberbank is the largest bank in Russia. The largest shareholder is the Central bank of Russia with 50% of its authorized capital. The remaining shares are held by domestic and foreign investors. Since 1996, Sberbank’s shares have been publicly traded in Russia and have been admitted to trade over the counter in the United States. Additionally, they are listed in the Frankfurt stock exchange.

VTB is the second largest bank in Russia with the government owning 60% of the shares. Its shares are among the most liquid in the entire Federation. They are publicly traded both in Russia and London stock Exchange.

The bank has an extensive network across the Russian Federation. It has over 500 offices delivering quality and customer friendly services to clients. In both 2001 and 2005, the Banker magazine declared Gazprombank the bank of the year.

Alfa Bank was founded in 1990. Today, it is among the leading private banks. Alfa Bank is actively involved in corporate banking, investment banking, retail banking, interbank SME, leasing, structured finance and retail lending.

Founded in 1995, PromSvyazBank is currently one of the largest privately owned banks in Russia. Unlike some other banks where the government has a significant share, this bank is entirely owned by private individuals. In terms of capital, it ranks among the top 500 worldwide.

  1. Otkritie Financial Corporation Bank

Established in 1993, Otkritie Financial Corporation Bank is privately owned. It is part of Otkritie FC Banking group comprising of the corporation bank and Khanty Mansiysk Otkritie Bank. The group is ranked first among private banks in Russia.

  1. Russian Agricultural Bank

Russian Agricultural Bank, popularly known as RusAg, is wholly owned by the Government of Russia. It is regulated by the Central Bank of Russia. One of its key areas of focus is the provision of credit to agribusinesses. Today, the bank operates 77 branches and 1,300 offices across the Federation. RusAg has the second largest number of branches in the country. As a result, it is able to reach the clients for the purpose of marketing as well as offering them services.

UniCredit is leading commercial bank not only in Russia but also in Europe. It operates in over 20 Eastern and Central European Countries. To facilitate its operations, the bank has 9,300 branches and over 159,000 employees serving its customers in the various countries of operation.

AO Raiffeisenbank is one of the market leaders in Russia. It offers retail lending and banking services. It is owned by Raiffeisen Bank International AG.

Rosbank forms part of Societe Generale Group. As a policy of the group, the bank focuses on improving the quality of services offered to clients, leading in innovation, and sustainable business growth.
